Maastricht Criteria

Criteria, set out in the Maastricht Treaty, relating to inflation, budget deficits and public debt, that needed to be met by countries if they wanted to become members of European Monetary Union and adopt the euro. The Maastricht Treaty was signed in 1991 and established the European Union to replace the European Community.
